## What an AI helpdesk is

An AI helpdesk is a helpdesk whose queue is worked, in part, by software. The phrase hides three different buys: the desk's own AI, a new helpdesk, or a layer on the desk you already run.

## The phrase hides the system of record.

People use AI helpdesk for any support operation where a model classifies, drafts, routes, or resolves. The desk might be one you already license. It might be a product you are being asked to switch to. The words do not say which.

The stable object is the system of record. Tickets, SLAs, and history live somewhere. An AI helpdesk project either keeps that place or moves it. Those are not the same budget, and not the same owner.

## Built-in, a new desk, or a layer.

The desk's own AI means turning on the assistant your helpdesk vendor ships. You stay. The boundary is whatever that product can see.

A new AI helpdesk means migrating the queue. You are buying an inbox that includes a model. The migration is the project. The model is not a reason to migrate unless the inbox itself is what you need to leave.

A layer means the desk stays, and another product finishes work inside it, including systems the desk does not own. That is the shape to consider when the desk is not the problem. It is the wrong shape if you have already chosen the next system of record.

## Ignore a ranking of one category.

Ignore a page that ranks AI helpdesks as if they were one category. A bundled copilot, a platform swap, and a layer on an ITSM are answers to different questions.

Ignore a finish rate with no definition of finish. A conversation closed in a vendor's window, an assisted reply, and a ticket written back to the system of record are three different events.

## Name the desk decision first.

If your team is searching this term because the current desk is failing as a desk, say that and run a platform evaluation. AI copy will not make that decision for you.

If the desk is staying, use the built-in versus layer guide, then the comparison for the platform you run. Zendesk and ServiceNow each have one, and both say when leaving is the honest answer.

## Common questions

### Is an AI helpdesk a replacement for Zendesk or ServiceNow?

Only if you want to replace them. Most teams on those systems are looking for AI on the instance they already run. The Zendesk and ServiceNow comparisons are written for that case, and both say when leaving the platform is the right call.

### Is a chatbot an AI helpdesk?

A chatbot can be the front door of one. It is not the desk. The desk is where the ticket, the SLA, and the history live. A conversation that never lands there has not become a helpdesk.

### Where should we start?

With the system of record you intend to keep. Then read what an AI layer is, and the comparison for that platform. The glossary is there if you need a term before a guide.
